The bulk of his "radical" pursuits involved such things as organizing fund-raising campaigns for the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War and other anti-fascist pursuits. During the 1920s, Oppenheimer kept his distance from worldly affairs. Oppenheimer conducted research in theoretical astrophysics, especially in the fringe area with general relativity on black holes and neutron stars, but also in nuclear physics, spectroscopy and quantum field theory, river plate jersey and quantum electrodynamics. For Oppenheimer an intimate personal reference to Jean Tatlock, his lover in the 1930s, who had brought Donne's work to his attention and who, to Oppenheimer's dismay, had killed himself a few months before the Trinity test. He even claimed that he had only heard about the stock market crash of 1929 a few months later – Oppenheimer himself had no money worries: his family provided him with sufficient financial support. The tournament itself started on July 11 and ended on July 30. The joint work of the scientists at Los Alamos resulted in the first nuclear explosion at Alamogordo on July 16, 1945. Oppenheimer named this experiment "Trinity" after a poem by John Donne. We expect the schedule to be announced in mid-July. But Groves, the project leader, still considered Oppenheimer too important to the ultimate goals of the Allies to dismiss him. Oppenheimer worked closely with experimental physicist friend Ernest Orlando Lawrence and his pioneers of the cyclotron. These articles later became the starting point for John Wheeler in his further development of the general theory of relativity for black holes.
Nevertheless, some, such as the physicist Luis Alvarez, believe that if Oppenheimer had lived long enough for his predictions to come true, he might have won the Nobel Prize for his work on gravitational collapse, neutron stars, and black holes. In the late 1930s he and Hartland Snyder wrote the first papers on what we now call black holes (the Oppenheimer-Snyder model, 1939). They calculated a limit to the mass of stars – the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit – above which no neutron star can form but only a black hole. Throughout the project, Oppenheimer was under scrutiny, both by the FBI and by the security of the project itself, because of his past, left-wing associations. Control of the project – now called the Manhattan Project – was transferred to the US military. Early in the project, Oppenheimer had reported to Manhattan Project security that an old friend of his, Haakon Chevalier—a professor of French literature at Berkeley and a known communist sympathizer—had asked him to reveal nuclear secrets.
Oppenheimer was known for mastering all scientific aspects of the project, but also made an effort to contain the inevitable conflicts between scientists and military personnel. Oppenheimer also predicted the neutron, the meson and, as mentioned, the neutron star. Like many young intellectuals in the 1930s, he was a supporter of communist ideas. He never openly joined the Communist Party. Since 2021, Demba has been a member of the board of directors of the Flemish Audiovisual Fund.
