After the war, some players had retired and three others had been killed. After a ninth place, the competition was halted for a few years due to the Second World War. In the following years, the club played with varying degrees of success in the sub-top or lower middle bracket. The Preston Grasshoppers had been around for several years and attracted some two to three thousand supporters each week, Preston North End could not compete with this. After a few bad seasons, the club was shared with Tottenham vice champions in 1956/57. After the war, the club was able to stay in the top division until 1924/25, but never finished above sixteenth place out of twenty-two clubs. After two mediocre seasons, another relegation followed in 1960/61. Nobody knew at the time that the club would never return to the elite. On the last day, Arsenal won 3-2 against Derby County and thus took the title with the same number of points as Preston, but a percentage of 0.1 goal per game more. Preston immediately made football history, winning the league title without losing a single game and 11 points ahead of Aston Villa. In 1970, Preston North End was relegated to the third division for the first time in its existence, along with Aston Villa.

The Dutch Professional Football Association (NBVB) was founded and a paid competition was launched outside the KNVB, in which ten clubs participated.
